Barrier BEauty
May, 2021 - Public art, outdoor probono mural
Project: Beautify the Barriers Location: 16 N Walnut St, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055 Mechanicsburg Simpson Library's call to local artists to paint their jersey barrier along their property line to promote their summer reading program theme of the year, Tails and Tales.

This design concept is a play on words to represent Tails for Tales. “The Tail End” starts a little “fishy” with a mermaid, seahorse, and shark swimming by. Tails of animals make up the calligraphy. It begins with a fox and ends with a hound’s joyful tail. In between is a black cat, lemur, bunny jumping away, yellow duck, piggy tail, and you can’t forget the elephant deep in thought. A dinosaur stands behind everything while I imagine the alligator saying ‘see you later’ as he walks away. The background is categorized into three elements. The first third are swirly water waves. The next is growing greenery for the earth dwellers. The last third ends with a warm fiery sunset. My goal is that readers of all ages will be reminded of a story or make their own narrative of this tail wagging artwork.

SMORGASBORDJuly, 2019 - Public art, utility box
Medium: Gel acrylic and clear varnish Location: corner of W. High St. and S. Pitt St. Beautification project called Art While You Wait coordinated by Color Carlisle, the Borough of Carlisle, and sponsored by PNC Bank. Everyone's theme is Love Carlisle, so my box expresses the diverse foods the town has to offer. A graffiti style was chosen in order that viewers could easily recognize elements far away. October, 2015 - Display competition
Medium: Chalk Photo credit (main photo): David Rudy CONCEPT: PSECU's partnership with HACC has them shaking hands in a 15-year partnership. To reinforce this idea "PARTNERSHIP" is written on the bottom. Design inspiration comes from the dollar bill since PSECU is a credit union. SERIAL NUMBER: On the left PA80902215 is significant. PA stands for Pennsylvania from the 'P' in PSECU. 80 represents over 80 years PSECU started with just $90 with 22 state employers. |
COLOR:
The design is intricate, so I wanted to keep the colors simple with just white and the red for both parties' logo. SYMBOLISM: Instead of the eye of providence pyramid I used eyes wearing glasses to stand for honesty and intelligence. Instead of an eagle, our school mascot the hawk has the HACC logo on his chest. In the place of arrows the eagle would hold, our hawk holds a diploma in his claws with a graduation cap on his head. CEO: Greg Smith being the CEO of PSECU has his name on the middle banner. Similar to a dollar who would say which president is displayed. |

Tree Perspectives
2013 - Performance display
Medium: Acrylic on masonite board
Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA) end of the year performance held at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts
This performance gave me a huge collaboration experience. My visual arts class of 9 students were delegated 12 paintings that together make one piece of artwork. Each section is painted in a different style to show how diversity creates a whole. One of my paintings is the bottom left corner in a realistic style. It was exciting to brainstorm a visual with all of the divisions. It was even neater that we went with my suggested tree idea.

BSHS muralMay 2012 - High school mural
Photo credit: Taylor Howie This was a collaboration with the National Art Honor Society club to paint a mural in the school hallway. South Middleton School District's colors are purple and gold. Different subjects were depicted falling out or breaking out of our deep purple painted lockers. My task was to paint Andy Warhol in black and white (far left figure crossing his arms), Joseph Mancuso, assistant superintendent (who I am painting in the photo), and touch ups. When I visit the school again I'll take detailed shots of my work. |
