joseph cornellwas an American artist who is best known
for his collage boxes with found objects. Title: Shipped from Hunan Dimensions: 20" X 16" X 5 3/4" Medium: wooden box with found objects My Joseph CornelI box has great personal meaning because it represents the struggle of not knowing my family past. Since I was adopted from China the outside of the box is wrapped in white paper. In Chinese culture the color white symbolizes mourning the loss of a loved one. In this case, I grieve over my family I will never get a chance to meet. Two Sections Divided into two sections, the narrow left compartment is the busy congested feelings and thoughts I keep in a closed closet. The larger portion of the box is open, friendly, and organized way I present myself to the public eye. An empty frame represents the art I have yet to make for years to come. In the Chinese Zodiac I am the year of the boar, so I have a bobble head pig. |
Baby Food Jars
Each baby food jar screwed in place represents preserving what I have. I am a Chinese-American, so the jars can be read from left to right or right to left. The jar on the far left contains sewing materials because I was knit in my mother's womb. The white buttons the represents a pure soul. There's one red button that stands for the mistakes in life that are worn like a stain. Along with those are pins that are the sharp pain of never meeting my mother and father who created me. The jar full of fortunes is the education and wisdom in my life. Since the creation of fortune cookies are American this little dessert represents my American upbringing, but Chinese appearance. The middle jar is a copy of a drawing I did when I was four years old. It's cut into pieces to say my raw passion for art is influenced and matured by each part of my life. A red money envelope sits curled up in the next jar. Here is the celebration of all my materialistic and spiritual blessings. The jar on the far right is a photo of me with my adoption group, which shows that I know many others have adoption stories too. |
